The Fast and The Furious: How We Chose the Cars

Craig Lieberman, the original technical advisor for the Fast and Furious films, explains how the cars were picked.  The Nissan Skyline GT-R was an R33 from MotoRex, a JDM import, and one of very few available at that time.  Getting more R33 for the movie would have required importing more from Japan, and the movie just didn't have the budget for that.  After the first Fast and Furious film, Craig Lieberman purchased an R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R from MotoRex.  That car became the main character car for the second movie, 2Fast 2Furious.

It's important to understand what cars were available at the time, what kind of budget Universal had and the fact that this movie was a first in the series and as such, companies who provided parts and support were taking a giant leap of faith.
