2025 Nissan R35 GT R Premium Edition T Spec in Millennium Jade for sale at Toprank Global in Japan

The Nissan R35 GT R has reached an important point in its history.

Production has ended, the newest examples are already attracting collectors, and buyers are starting to look beyond the used R35 GT Rs currently available in the United States.

Some buyers want a rare Japanese specification R35. Some want a final production car. Others want to purchase an R35 in Japan, drive it during visits, attend events, create a history with the vehicle, and eventually import it to the United States when it becomes legally eligible.

The usual plan for buying a Japanese vehicle that is not yet legal for normal importation sounds simple:

Buy the car, store it in Japan, wait until it reaches 25 years old, and import it.

That is only part of the opportunity.

You can own an R35 GT R in Japan and make it part of your life now. You can travel to Japan, drive your own car, visit shops, attend automotive events, participate in selected track days, and have the vehicle maintained by Japanese specialists.

The R35 does not have to remain untouched for years while you wait for an import date.

It can be your car in Japan.

Toprank can help a United States buyer locate an R35 GT R, inspect it, purchase it, arrange storage or Japanese road registration, coordinate maintenance, prepare it for driving and selected events, and eventually arrange export and United States importation when the vehicle becomes legally eligible.

Why Buy an R35 GT R in Japan?

The R35 GT R was officially sold in the United States, so buying one in Japan is not automatically the least expensive or simplest option.

The primary reason to look in Japan is access.

Japan offers specifications, colors, limited production models, condition levels, modification histories, and ownership histories that may be difficult to find elsewhere.

The Japanese market received many desirable R35 models, including Premium Edition cars, T Spec versions, Track Editions engineered by NISMO, R35 GT R NISMO models, rare colors, and extremely low mileage collector examples.

For many buyers, the goal is not simply to own any R35. It is to find the right R35.

  • A very early 2007 or 2008 Japanese market R35
  • A low mileage and highly original example
  • A rare factory color
  • A Premium Edition T Spec
  • A Track Edition engineered by NISMO
  • An R35 GT R NISMO
  • A final production 2025 model
  • A vehicle with documented Japanese service history
  • A car modified by a respected Japanese tuning shop
  • An R35 suitable for road use and track events in Japan

The ideal car may appear years before it becomes eligible for normal importation into the United States.

Purchasing the right example when it becomes available may make more sense than waiting until American demand is focused on the same limited group of cars.

Do Not Just Store Your R35 in Japan. Own It in Japan.

Long term storage may be part of the plan, but it should not define the entire ownership experience.

There is an important difference between having a vehicle stored in Japan and having a vehicle that you actively own and use in Japan.

A vehicle in static storage may remain off the road, receive scheduled inspections and maintenance, and wait for its future export date.

An actively owned Japan based car may include:

  • Japanese road registration
  • Shaken inspection
  • Compulsory and supplemental insurance
  • Regular maintenance
  • Road use during visits
  • Touring events
  • Car meets
  • Photography and video shoots
  • Selected track days

Depending on the vehicle and the arrangements made, an owner may be able to visit Japan and drive the car during the trip, tour areas outside Tokyo, attend GT R events, visit tuning shops, or participate in an organized circuit event.

This approach turns a long wait into an ownership experience.

You are not simply purchasing a future American import. You are creating a Japanese chapter in the history of the vehicle.

A Reason to Return to Japan

For many owners, having a car in Japan becomes a reason to visit more often.

A trip might be planned around Tokyo Auto Salon, R’s Meeting, NISMO Festival, a Toprank event, a track day, or a visit to a respected GT R workshop.

The vehicle can be inspected and prepared before the owner arrives so time in Japan can be spent driving instead of dealing with overdue maintenance.

The experience could include driving through Tokyo, touring Hakone, visiting Fuji Speedway, exploring the countryside, attending a meet, or taking part in an organized circuit event.

The exact opportunities depend on the vehicle’s registration, insurance, condition, maintenance status, and the rules of each event.

Your R35 can become part of your travel experience in Japan.

Real Japanese Ownership Experiences

Larry Chen, Jun Imai, Dustin Williams, and Mickey Andrade have all demonstrated that purchasing a Japanese car can involve much more than sending money and waiting for a future import date.

The vehicle can connect its owner to Japanese builders, designers, photographers, collectors, workshops, events, roads, and circuits.

Larry Chen

Automotive photographer Larry Chen purchased a Bayside Blue R34 GT R through Toprank and traveled to Japan to drive it.

Larry has spent years documenting Japanese car culture, workshops, race cars, private collections, and automotive events. His experience demonstrates that the appeal is not limited to the vehicle itself. It is also about the people, locations, history, and experiences surrounding the car.

Jun Imai

Jun Imai, founder of Kaido House and a longtime automotive designer and enthusiast, took delivery of an R34 GT R in Japan with help from Toprank.

His ownership experience shows how a vehicle can connect an owner with builders, collectors, designers, and enthusiasts on both sides of the Pacific.

Dustin Williams

Dustin Williams purchased his R34 GT R through Toprank and traveled to Japan to see and drive the car before it entered storage.

His later trips continued the experience through Tokyo Auto Salon, Japanese driving, vehicle projects, events, and Toprank track activities.

Instead of treating storage as dead time, Dustin made the vehicle part of his automotive life years before it became eligible for importation.

When the vehicle finally became eligible, it arrived in the United States with a history involving Japanese roads, maintenance, modifications, events, and experiences.

Mickey Andrade

Mickey Andrade has also demonstrated the value of being involved with a vehicle in Japan instead of treating it as inventory sitting on the other side of the world.

The experience is about being present, driving the vehicle, meeting the people involved, and participating in the culture.

You do not need to be a professional photographer, designer, or YouTube creator to have a similar ownership experience. A plan can be developed around the owner’s schedule, budget, vehicle, intended use, and eventual import date.

The Toprank Ownership Experience

Toprank Japanese car ownership experience including delivery driving storage events and future import
The Toprank experience can include sourcing, delivery, maintenance, storage, driving, events, and eventual importation

The vehicle does not have to feel trapped in storage.

For the right owner, it can become a Japan based car. You can visit Japan, drive it, attend events, arrange maintenance, and experience the vehicle in the culture that created it.

Toprank customers have participated in events at Fuji Speedway, Tsukuba Circuit, and Suzuka Circuit.

Fuji Speedway is Toprank’s largest customer track event and provides an opportunity for owners to drive their cars at one of Japan’s most famous circuits.

A Japan based R35 can potentially be inspected and prepared for track use based on its registration status, condition, insurance, event rules, and the services arranged in advance.

Possible track preparation may include:

  • Engine oil and filter service
  • GR6 transmission inspection
  • Front and rear differential fluid inspection
  • Brake fluid replacement
  • Brake pad and rotor inspection
  • Tire age and condition inspection
  • Wheel torque and alignment checks
  • Cooling system inspection
  • Fault code scan
  • General safety inspection

A delivery mileage T Spec may be better suited to preservation. A clean Pure Edition or Track Edition may be a better choice for regular driving and occasional circuit use.

Customize and Develop Your Car Through the Global Tuning Program

Toprank is a pioneer in importing 25 year old Japanese classics, but purchasing and importing the car is only part of what we can offer.

Through the Toprank Global Tuning Program, customers can purchase a vehicle in Japan and customize it to their specifications through a carefully selected network of Japanese tuning and restoration partners.

The Global Tuning Program, or GTP, was created to offer a more personal and complete JDM ownership experience.

Customers can:

  • Purchase a vehicle from Toprank Japan
  • Ask Toprank to locate a specific vehicle
  • Send an existing vehicle to Japan for tuning or restoration
  • Work with selected Japanese tuning partners
  • Create a personalized road, touring, restoration, or track focused build
  • Retain and document original components
  • Drive and enjoy the completed car in Japan
  • Attend road tours, meets, and selected track events
  • Import the vehicle when the correct legal pathway becomes available

Through GTP, Toprank aims to elevate each car into a unique ownership opportunity.

The program is not limited to adding parts or pursuing maximum horsepower. The objective is to create the right car for the individual owner.

That may mean preserving a rare and original R35 GT R, improving the reliability and road manners of a regularly driven car, preparing a vehicle for Fuji Speedway, Tsukuba Circuit, or Suzuka Circuit, or creating a fully personalized Japanese build.

Carefully Selected Japanese Tuning Partners

Toprank’s Global Tuning Program partners are selected based on reputation, expertise, craftsmanship, and compatibility with Toprank’s values.

Japan has some of the most experienced GT R tuners, mechanics, engine builders, restoration specialists, and chassis experts in the world.

Through GTP, customers can gain access to that experience through a structured process managed by Toprank.

A customized program may include:

  • Vehicle inspection and baseline testing
  • Preventive maintenance
  • Engine inspection or rebuilding
  • Transmission and driveline service
  • Suspension development
  • Brake upgrades
  • Wheel and tire selection
  • Cooling and reliability improvements
  • Road or track preparation
  • Interior and exterior restoration
  • Installation of authentic Japanese components
  • Build photography and documentation

The correct program depends on the car and the owner.

A delivery mileage T Spec may be best preserved in original condition. A Pure Edition intended for regular use may benefit from suspension, brake, cooling, and reliability improvements. A Track Edition may be prepared for events at Fuji Speedway, Tsukuba Circuit, or Suzuka Circuit.

Dustin Williams and His Midori Seibi R34 GT R

Dustin Williams provides a strong example of what the Global Tuning Program can become.

Dustin purchased his R34 GT R through Toprank and enjoyed the car in Japan before it became eligible for importation into the United States.

His car was later customized with a specially built Midori Seibi engine created specifically for him.

The project was not simply a vehicle purchase followed by years of storage.

It became a complete ownership experience involving Japanese driving, events, tuning, maintenance, personalization, and eventual importation into the United States.

This is the type of experience the Global Tuning Program is designed to create.

Built By Legends and the Future of Japanese Restomods

Built By Legends brings together respected Japanese craftsmen, restoration specialists, tuners, and manufacturers to create a new level of Japanese restomod.

The most established Built By Legends programs currently include R32, R33, and R34 Skyline GT R projects developed with MINE’S and Garage Yoshida. Built By Legends has also expanded into Honda projects and is not limited to one model or one manufacturer.

The larger vision is to apply the same philosophy of authenticity, craftsmanship, performance, restoration, and detailed documentation to other important Japanese vehicles. That creates future possibilities for the R35 GT R and other significant Japanese performance cars.

Current Built By Legends programs demonstrate capabilities that may include:

  • Bare chassis restoration
  • 3D chassis alignment measurement
  • Rust removal and underbody refinishing
  • Engine bay, interior, and exterior refinishing
  • Structural restoration where required
  • Additional chassis reinforcement
  • Suspension bushing and bearing replacement
  • Powder coating of suspension components
  • Specialist engine development
  • Upgraded braking and suspension systems
  • Dry carbon exterior components
  • Custom interiors and instrumentation
  • Complete build documentation

The important point is not that every R35 should become a full restomod.

The opportunity is that an owner purchasing an R35 in Japan may have access to the same wider network of Japanese knowledge, craftsmanship, tuning, restoration, and development.

A future R35 project could focus on:

  • Factory quality restoration
  • Long term preservation
  • Road focused development
  • Track focused preparation
  • Period appropriate Japanese tuning
  • A complete restomod developed with selected Japanese partners

As the R35 becomes an established Japanese classic, the possibilities for deeper restoration and restomod programs will continue to grow.

Choose the right car, work with the right Japanese specialists, preserve its history, improve it thoughtfully, document the process, and create a vehicle that can be driven and appreciated for generations.

Hiroshi Tamura and Toprank

Hiroshi Tamura with Toprank in Japan
Hiroshi Tamura brings decades of Nissan GT R and Z experience to Toprank

Toprank’s connection to the GT R goes beyond buying, selling, storing, and importing cars.

Hiroshi Tamura is Toprank’s Global Brand Ambassador.

Tamura san spent decades at Nissan and became one of the people most closely associated with the modern GT R and Z.

His history includes involvement with the R34 GT R, development and evolution of the R35 GT R, and the modern Nissan Z.

He is often referred to by enthusiasts as “Mr. GT R.”

Tamura san has always treated performance cars as more than collections of specifications. A vehicle needs character, a connection with its driver, and a reason for people to care about it.

That philosophy fits the Toprank approach to owning a vehicle in Japan.

The objective should not simply be to park a car for years. It should be preserved properly, maintained, understood, and enjoyed when possible.

It should help carry Japanese performance car culture into the future.

The Nissan GT R Skyline Edition

United States market 2024 Nissan GT R Skyline Edition sold by Toprank Importers

Unlike the R32, R33, and R34, the R35 was not officially sold as a Skyline GT R.

It became the Nissan GT R.

However, Nissan brought the Skyline name back for a special final era R35 sold in North America.

The 2024 Nissan GT R Skyline Edition was based on the GT R Premium and finished in Bayside Blue, the color most closely associated with the R34 Skyline GT R.

It also received a distinctive Sora Blue interior.

Only 100 Skyline Edition cars were allocated for the United States market.

The Skyline Edition connects the R35 back to the name and color that helped define the previous generation.

It also demonstrates why unusual late production R35 specifications are already attracting collector interest.

Important final era R35 models include:

  • 2024 GT R Skyline Edition
  • GT R T Spec
  • T Spec Takumi Edition
  • Track Edition engineered by NISMO
  • R35 GT R NISMO
  • Rare factory colors
  • Final production Japanese market cars
  • Extremely low mileage original examples

The Skyline Edition was a United States market model and does not need to remain in Japan until it reaches 25 years old.

It remains relevant because it highlights the importance of specification, color, production numbers, and historical connection when selecting a collectible R35.

The R35 GT R Is Now a Finished Production Car

Nissan introduced the R35 GT R in 2007.

The R35 combined the hand assembled VR38DETT twin turbocharged V6 with the GR6 dual clutch rear transaxle and Nissan’s ATTESA E TS all wheel drive system.

The platform remained in production for approximately 18 years.

Rather than replacing it with a completely new generation every few years, Nissan continually refined the R35.

Later cars received major improvements in:

  • Engine output
  • Transmission calibration
  • Suspension tuning
  • Braking performance
  • Aerodynamics
  • Interior quality
  • Ride comfort
  • Noise and vibration control

A 2025 R35 is related to a 2007 R35, but the ownership experience can be very different.

Nissan ended R35 production in Japan in August 2025. Every R35 now has a fixed place in the production history of the model.

Plan for Future United States Importation

Japanese ownership and future United States importation are separate parts of the plan.

A vehicle that is not currently eligible for normal permanent importation must remain outside the United States until it qualifies through an appropriate legal pathway. For most Japanese market R35 GT Rs, the normal federal age exemption will begin when the individual vehicle reaches 25 years from its actual manufacture date.

The earliest Japanese market R35 GT Rs were manufactured in 2007. Those cars should begin reaching the 25 year threshold during 2032. A 2025 car would generally not reach 25 years of age until 2050.

R35 manufacture year Approximate 25 year eligibility year
2007 2032
2008 2033
2010 2035
2015 2040
2020 2045
2025 2050

These are estimated eligibility years. The exact manufacture date and the requirements in effect at the time must be confirmed before export.

Toprank can help preserve the vehicle’s identity, service history, original components, Japanese records, and ownership documentation while it remains in Japan.

Federal import eligibility does not automatically guarantee registration in every state. California and some other states may have additional requirements, so the intended registration state should be considered when selecting and preparing the vehicle.

For an example of how Toprank’s Japanese and United States operations can work together on a complex GT R project, read about the NISMO CRS R34 GT R becoming California compliant.

Early R35 or Final Production R35?

Early R35 GT R

A 2007 or 2008 Japanese market R35 provides the shortest wait before normal 25 year eligibility.

Early cars may also cost less than rare final production models.

However, early R35s require careful inspection. Transmission condition, previous launch use, maintenance history, modifications, accident repairs, fluid service, and general wear are all important.

Later R35 GT R

Later cars benefit from years of factory development.

Depending on the year and specification, improvements may include better refinement, revised suspension, improved transmission behavior, stronger braking, increased engine output, and updated aerodynamics.

The disadvantage is the longer wait before normal age based importation.

Special Edition or Collector R35

A NISMO, T Spec, Track Edition, rare color, or exceptionally low mileage example may be worth buying because of what it is rather than because it will be importable soon.

In that case, Japan storage becomes a long term ownership and preservation strategy.

Choose Between Static Storage and Active Ownership

Static Storage

Static storage may be appropriate for:

  • An unused or nearly new final production car
  • A delivery mileage T Spec
  • A rare NISMO model
  • A vehicle with factory protective material still installed
  • A car purchased primarily for preservation

Active Ownership in Japan

Active ownership is for a buyer who wants to experience the vehicle while it remains in Japan.

It may require:

  • Japanese registration
  • Shaken inspection
  • Compulsory and supplemental insurance
  • Annual taxes and registration costs
  • Regular maintenance
  • Tire and brake replacement
  • Battery and fluid service
  • Scheduling and preparation before each visit

Active ownership costs more than static storage, but it creates experiences that cannot be measured only by the vehicle’s resale value.

Storing an R35 Is More Than Parking It

The R35 is a complex performance car. Long term storage should include more than placing it under a cover and disconnecting the battery.

  • Secure indoor storage
  • Battery maintenance
  • Fuel condition management
  • Engine oil and filter service
  • Transmission and differential fluid checks
  • Brake fluid inspection
  • Coolant inspection
  • Tire pressure monitoring
  • Protection from flat spotting
  • Moisture and rodent inspection
  • Periodic system checks
  • Controlled road operation when appropriate
  • Condition photographs
  • Written maintenance records

Inspect Before You Buy

An R35 should not be purchased based only on auction grade, mileage, or photographs.

  • Transmission operation and noise
  • Clutch learning and shift behavior
  • Engine condition
  • Turbocharger condition
  • Fluid leaks
  • Previous accident repairs
  • Underbody corrosion or damage
  • Brake rotor and pad condition
  • Tire age and matching specifications
  • Suspension wear
  • Warning lights and stored fault codes
  • Aftermarket engine or transmission programming
  • Exhaust and emissions modifications
  • Launch history when available
  • Service records
  • Chassis number and registration documents

Low mileage does not automatically mean perfect condition.

A properly serviced higher mileage vehicle can sometimes be a better purchase than a neglected collector car.

Keep Every Document

  • Purchase agreement
  • Japanese registration records
  • Export certificate when issued
  • Manufacture date evidence
  • Chassis number photographs
  • Auction sheet when applicable
  • Inspection report
  • Maintenance invoices
  • Storage invoices
  • Modification records
  • Original parts inventory
  • Mileage records
  • Insurance records
  • Japanese road inspection records

Do not assume a missing record will be easy to recover 10 or 20 years later.

Federal Importation Does Not Guarantee State Registration

Federal importation and state registration are separate processes.

A vehicle may be legally admitted into the United States and still face additional state title, inspection, emissions, or registration requirements.

California is the most important example.

Do not assume a 25 year old R35 can automatically be registered for normal California road use simply because United States Customs released it.

The buyer’s intended state of registration should be part of the plan before the vehicle is purchased.

What Will It Cost?

  • Vehicle purchase price
  • Japanese transaction costs
  • Auction or buyer fees
  • Prepurchase inspection
  • Transportation within Japan
  • Storage
  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Japanese registration and insurance
  • Shaken inspection
  • Track preparation and event costs
  • Export processing
  • Ocean freight
  • Marine insurance
  • Customs duty
  • Port charges
  • Broker fees
  • State title and registration
  • Possible state emissions compliance
  • Transportation from the port

A car requiring 10 or 20 years in Japan should be treated as a long term ownership commitment.

Is Buying an R35 in Japan an Investment?

Some R35 GT Rs may appreciate. Others may not increase enough in value to offset storage, maintenance, taxes, insurance, currency changes, and transaction costs.

Rare specifications, original condition, low mileage, desirable colors, and documented histories may have stronger collector appeal.

That does not guarantee future value.

Buy the car because you want to own it.

The best outcome is a vehicle you enjoy in Japan, preserve correctly, and eventually bring home.

R35 Buying and Ownership Process

  1. Define the target. Choose the year, grade, color, mileage, condition, and budget.
  2. Define the ownership plan. Decide whether the car will be stored, registered, driven, or used at events.
  3. Search Japan. Review Toprank inventory, auctions, dealers, and private purchase opportunities.
  4. Inspect the vehicle. Verify condition, identity, history, originality, and documentation.
  5. Complete the purchase. Use a documented transaction.
  6. Arrange storage or active ownership. Select the appropriate maintenance and registration plan.
  7. Maintain the vehicle. Perform inspections and scheduled services while it remains in Japan.
  8. Drive and enjoy it. Arrange road use, events, or track preparation when appropriate.
  9. Preserve all records. Maintain digital and physical copies.
  10. Confirm eligibility. Verify the manufacture date and current import requirements.
  11. Export and import legally. Complete Customs, EPA, NHTSA, title, tax, and state requirements.

Other Cars Worth Buying and Owning in Japan

The R35 is only one possibility.

  • Subaru Impreza WRX STI GDB
  • Honda Integra Type R DC5
  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII and IX
  • Nissan Silvia S15
  • Mazda RX 7 Spirit R
  • Honda S2000 Type S
  • Toyota Altezza and other rare Japanese specifications
  • Limited production NISMO, STI, Mugen, TRD, and Ralliart models

Will a federally legal R35 automatically be legal in California?

No. Federal import eligibility and California registration are separate matters. California has additional emissions, inspection, and registration requirements.

Can Toprank locate an R35 that is not currently advertised?

Yes. Toprank Global can search Japanese auctions, dealer inventories, and other sources based on the desired year, specification, color, mileage, condition, and budget.

Buy the Experience, Not Just the Future Import

The right R35 may appear years before it becomes eligible for normal importation.

Waiting until the legal date may mean losing the opportunity to secure a particular color, special edition, condition level, or ownership history.

Buying early allows you to select the vehicle based on what it is rather than what happens to be available when the 25 year date arrives.

More importantly, buying early gives you time to enjoy it in Japan.

Buy the right car. Own it in Japan. Drive it. Attend events. Build memories. Preserve its history. Then import it legally when the time arrives.

The years before importation do not have to be years spent waiting.

They can be part of the reason to own the vehicle.
